Prevent Blindness America
In 1990, Prevent Blindness America initiated National Glaucoma Awareness Week. It kicked off with
a congressional resolution designating that first observance. The following year, Prevent Blindness
added Sight Saving Sabbath, with special programs to reach those at high risk in their places of
worship. Since then, additional groups have joined the campaign, which expanded in 1998 to include
the entire month of January. Prevent Blindness affiliates and divisions throughout the nation observe
Glaucoma Awareness Month with high-quality vision-screening events. Conducted by carefully trained
and certified volunteers, these screenings include visual field measurement as an effective way to
find people with signs of glaucoma. Information about activities at any of the 40 Prevent Blindness
affiliates and divisions can be obtained by calling 1-800-331-2020. Prevent Blindness' web site,
http://www.preventblindness.org, features a quiz to
assess your glaucoma risk factors, as well as other vision screening tools and eye health and safety
information. Prevent Blindness America is the nation's leading volunteer eye health and safety organization,
dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight
since 1908.
