Lighthouse International
Lighthouse International is a leading resource worldwide on vision impairment and vision rehabilitation. Through its pioneering
work in vision rehabilitation services, education, research and advocacy, Lighthouse International enables people of all ages
who are blind or partially sighted to lead independent and productive lives. Lighthouse International has more than 1,000 low
vision continuing education alumni, located throughout the United States and abroad.
The Lighthouse Center for Education seeks to educate people with vision impairment, their families, professionals, and the
public about vision impairment and the availability of resources and services that help overcome the consequences of diminished
sight. Through its information and resource service (toll-free), information about eye disease as well as national and international
vision rehabilitation services and resources for people of all ages with impaired vision is available.
The Lighthouse Center for Education
- Develops print and audiovisual education products about vision impairment for consumers, professionals, and the general public.
- Provides courses in all aspects of low vision and other vision rehabilitation services.
- Develops seminars and community lectures for consumers, families, and friends highlighting new treatments, research, and technology that can benefit people with impaired vision across the life span.
- Conducts research demonstration projects such as the development of curricula for professionals and outreach programs utilizing volunteers with impaired vision.
- Provides leadership in advocacy to promote inclusion of people with impaired vision in all aspects of life and to foster legislation that promotes health care coverage for vision rehabilitation services.
Project InSights, a Lighthouse peer volunteer vision education program, promotes awareness of eye diseases that can result in
vision loss, including glaucoma. Prevention, treatment, and the benefits of vision rehabilitation are discussed by trained older
adult volunteers who conduct free vision education programs at community sites in Staten Island, Westchester, and Queens.

- Glaucoma Questions & Answers - a factsheet.
- Aging and Vision - a newsletter targeted to professionals, that focuses on treatments, technology, and research on vision impairment, highlighting innovations that promote understanding of low vision care and vision rehabilitation for people in their later years.
- Sharing Solutions - a newsletter for adults with impaired vision and their support networks, that focuses on issues related to coping with vision loss, as well as new technologies and treatments. Readers are encouraged to share their solutions to questions posed in every issue.
- Envision - a newsletter on vision impairment and vision rehabilitation targeting professionals and parents of children with impaired vision nationally and internationally.
