American Optometric Association
The American Optometric Association (AOA) seeks to advance the availability and accessibility of
quality eye, vision, and related health care; to represent the profession of optometry; to enhance
and promote the independent and ethical decision making of its members; and to assist doctors of
optometry in practicing successfully in accordance with the highest standards of patient care. The
Association supports year-round programming to educate Americans about their vision and eye health
and encourages people to take steps to preserve and protect their vision. AOA represents over 34,000
doctors of optometry trained in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease, including glaucoma.
Coordinates VISION USA, a program that provides no-cost eye care to uninsured, low-income workers
of all ages and their families. Nearly 7,400 AOA-member optometrists volunteer their time and
professional services through the VISION USA program. Beginning in October, information and a
national application form can be found on the AOA Web site in the "Meet the AOA" section. Also,
an application form may be obtained by writing:

In January 2001, telephone counselors will screen individuals for patient eligibility (requirements
vary by state). Interested persons may call this toll-free number, 1-800-766-4466, Monday through
Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (CST). Registration by application is strongly encouraged since the
phone lines are often very busy. Services provided through VISION USA include comprehensive eye e
xaminations (given in March); diagnosis and management of eye health and/or vision problems, including
glaucoma; a prescription for eyeglasses when needed; and referral to other health care professionals
when appropriate. Examinations are limited in some areas, and applicants will be reviewed on a first-come,
first-served basis. Patient education materials about glaucoma are available in English and Spanish.
Professional education materials include guidelines for the care of patients with open angle and primary
angle closure glaucoma. Information and education brochures about glaucoma are available at no cost by
calling 1-888-396-EYES (3937) or by visiting the Web site at http://www.aoanet.org.
