American Foundation for the Blind
The mission of the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is to enable people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve equality of access and opportunity that will ensure freedom of choice in their lives. AFB's National Programs Groups identify critical issues related to the education and rehabilitation of individuals who are blind or visually impaired, and strategy solutions to address national concerns. AFB has national programs in aging, education, employment, specialized services, access, and technology, as well as a national initiative on braille and low vision literacy.
The National Aging Program coordinates the National Aging and Vision Network, which consists of 350 professionals concerned with policies and programs for older people who are blind or have low vision. The Program publishes the quarterly, National Aging and Vision Update. The Network's current activity involves carrying out the National Agenda on Vision and Aging.
AFB's Information Center provides essential information to the general public and professionals via a toll-free hot line, 1-800-AFB-LINE, which offers information on low vision and blindness and referrals to state and community resources. AFB provides professional and public education.
AFB Press publishes textbooks, brochures, and videos on various aspects of blindness and low vision. AFB's National Technology Center evaluates adaptive equipment related to blindness and low vision. AFB records Talking Books in association with the Library of Congress.
AFB convenes the Josephine L. Taylor Leadership Institute (JLTLI), the leading annual policy conference in the vision field, and publishes the quarterly JLTLI Bulletin.
Publishes the following materials:
- Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness (JVIB).
- JVIB News Service.
- AFB News--newsletter.
- AFB Directory of Services for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons in the U.S. and Canada (hard cover and CD-ROM).
Provides information on eye conditions resulting in vision loss, as well as referrals to state and private agencies and other community resources.
Provides a packet for older people and their family members, "We Help Those Who Don't See Well Live Like Those Who Do."
